Interview

Rodi Style

Noir Newsletter catches up with one of Canada’s top Hard House DJs, Rodi Style. Rodi, as well as being an exceptionally talented DJ is also a master behind the synths,

 Noir Newsletter says (17:15):

So how are you doing today Mr Style?

Rodi Style  says (17:16):

I'm doing alright, sitting at my office job right now counting the minutes until I can run to the video game store and buy Call of Duty 4 for my ps3 haha!

Noir Newsletter says (17:17):

haha sounds good! we at noir have been playing a lot of Zelda recently on the Wii, that must be the reason all our wrists hurt so much!

Noir Newsletter says (17:17):

You were in the UK recently were you not?

Rodi Style  says (17:26):

I was in the UK the first weekend of October for the Tidy weekender and my residency at AE in Hereford

Noir Newsletter says (17:34):

How were those parties compared to gigs in Canada and America?

Rodi Style  says (17:37):

I find that gigs in the UK no matter what capacity are always more fun than ones in North America.  UK crowds are just more enthusiastic about hard house

Noir Newsletter says (17:38):

Where there any sets which stood out for you at A+E?

Rodi Style  says (17:40):

I'd have to say Neil C's set stood out the most to me that night.  Great energy behind the decks and it was really nice to see another DJ putting effort into doing tricks during a DJ set.

Noir Newsletter says (17:42):

Tell us a bit about the type of tricks you pull off. Which other DJs inspire you when it comes to the technical side of DJing?

Rodi Style  says (17:45):

I do a lot of tricks and effects based off of the Pioneer gear.  More specifically the hot cues/looping function on the CDJ1000's and the effects modules on the DJM mixers.  There's so much you can do with them it's not even funny, kinda like a piece of paper and a box of crayons so you can draw your own picture haha.  Djs that have really inspired me to work on the more technical side of things

Rodi Style  says (17:46):

would include James Zabiela and Eddie Halliwell.  Notable mentions to Mr. C and D.A.V.E. the Drummer as I have learnt alot from watching them play.

Rodi Style  says (17:47):

I remember seeing Mr. C MC over top his DJ set a few years back.  Sounded really cool but something I'd never attempt because I'd sound like an idiot

Noir Newsletter says (17:51):

From what we've seen your sets are blinding! How do you rate your performance at the Tidy Weekender that just passed?

Rodi Style  says (17:54):

Ooof that's a hard one, I'm quite happy with my set although I really felt I could have done more.  They had an EFX1000 unit that I couldn't get to work so I wasn't able to do any fx tricks.  That was a bit of a bummer but probably for the better because I'd never used one before haha! Only knew how to use it theoretically from watching videos so things could have gotten ugly if I messed things up

Noir Newsletter says (17:56):

Which song from your set do you reckon caused the most commotion on the dancefloor?

Rodi Style  says (18:00):

Without a doubt "Rodi Style & DJ Pseudo - Pistol Packing (Rodi's high oktane mix)" forthcoming on Oktane Records *cough cough*

Noir Newsletter says (18:02):

You should do something about that cough! Where are your speaking us to us from then Rodi? (It's pronounced Roh-dee, not Rodi right?)

Rodi Style  says (18:05):

I'm back in Canada right now at my daytime job   Boourns.  That's correct, it's actually pronounced "Road ee" but I'm used to people saying "Rod ee" as well.  I've stopped correcting people now because it's not a big deal

Noir Newsletter says (18:07):

We'd like to ask you some specifics about your techniques. Which FX do you use a lot specifically on your FX units?

Rodi Style  says (18:12):

I'd have to say my favorite effect on the DJM800 would have to be new *roll* effect.  If used correctly you can make some really nifty patterns!  Also the delay is another FX I rinse all the time.  I also enjoy scratching during my sets.

Rodi Style  says (18:12):

And I also enjoy long walks and sunsets on the beach

Noir Newsletter says (18:17):

Wouldn't recommend doing that in the UK right now without an umbrella mate. You had a track released on Noir Digital with Dan Dyson, Energizin' and now you have an upcoming one which is scheduled to be released on the same day as Noir's first vinyl. What do you think of both these tracks?

Rodi Style  says (18:20):

Energizin was one I did with Dan almost 2 years ago so personally I cringe when I hear the production quality as I have learnt so much more since then.  As for the "in power" remix due out soon, I'm very happy with it.  I was keen on remixing it after hearing the original by Nick the Greek and I think and hope I've done it justice!

Noir Newsletter says (18:23):

You're style has definetly progressed a lot over the years and 'Energizin' and it's remix by Ben Bostock have been selling very well.

Noir Newsletter says (18:23):

Have you got any upcoming releases you want to mention for the newsletter?

Rodi Style  says (18:26):

Thanks!  I've just recently started up my own vinyl label "Kung Fu Wax" and the first release is scheduled for mid January.  It's a 3 tracker made up of "Jump", "Let Go" and "Spelling Bee".  So far it's getting support from guys like Justin Bourne & Karl Davis so I'm really hoping people like it!

Noir Newsletter says (18:33):

You sound like a very busy guy Rodi so we'll leave you in peace, but before we go, can you tell us if you'll be visiting the UK again this year?

Rodi Style  says (18:37):

Yup I'll be back new years weekend for some gigs including AE on the 29th and Storm on NYE!

Noir Newsletter says (18:41):

Thanks for your time Rodi!

GRADY G
Human Balance (Nosebleed)

Genre: NRG

Grady G, one of the most consistent producers out there, has come out with two NRG stormers for Michael James’ Nosebleed label. ‘Human Balance’  is a track you would expect from Grady, chock-a-block with fast and furious beats. Haunting vocal samples and hoovers, all laced with twisted effects and a bassline that is guaranteed to tear the dancefloor to pieces.

‘Gutted’ is a truly insane track! This is where Grady’s genius really shines, creating a hugely layered and crystal clear wall of hard house sound. Slamming basses, rhythmic beeps, scratches and effects which are all the ingredients for one powerful slab of vinyl!

Jump (Kung Fu Wax)

Genre: Hard House / NRG

After just coming back from playing at the Tidy Weekender, Rodi has released some info about the debut release on his newly founded Kung Fu Wax label. ‘Jump’ is a track which is going to give your speakers the ultimate test. The lead in the track is a groovy synth lead which is accompanied by the an extremely phat bassline. The break is a reminder of Rodi’s filth NRG style, with an immense build-up which builds into a fantastically energetic peak.

‘Let Go’ starts off as a reminder of the older NRG days but continues into a progressive track which shifts into Rodi’s signature flowing hoover style. In ‘Spelling Bee’ there is a great use of samples, which have all be used to create a very funky and groovy hard house number.

Pierce Rooney in the past has already been signed to the likes of Vicious Circle, Karim’s legendary label Do Not Bend and Tinrib Digital and also has had 1 of his tracks, Rampage, signed to Tidy Weekender 9 CD mix by Paul Glazby himself to name but a few and has a track called Bountyhunter out on Flashpoint Records this year.

Also due on Oktane is Pandemonium. Omega3 A.K.A. Captain Tinrib, Dale and Steve's track which was signed by UNITY will feature on the Omega3 Lost at Sea album by Captain Tinrib - out Oct 2007!

This week Noir Newsletters has a quick chat with Hard House upstart, Sam Hudson.

Noir Newsletter says (10:01):

Hello Sam! How the devil are you?

- Sam Hudson says (10:02):

Hello Alex! not too bad thanks, how about you?

Noir Newsletter says (10:03):

I'm great thanks! What have you been up to recently production wise?

- Sam Hudson says (10:07):

You know what, not that much as i've moved from pc to mac and from reason and cubase to logic...hence losing me some time learning the ins and outs, but this is something i've not regretted for a second as logic is incredible! i've just started a few new things which i'm gonna keep on top of and finish, just takes me alot longer at the moment!

- Sam Hudson says (10:08):

oh and thanks to dave owens, dom sweeten and gary cooke for being my shoulder to cry on when i need some help with anything logic or mac based!!!!

Noir Newsletter says (10:10):

What style of music have you been playing out recently? Will you be changing style now you are working behind a different sequencer?

- Sam Hudson says (10:15):

playing out i've been playing more kinda of techy hard stuff to start with then ending a little harder, i dont really think changing to logic will change alot of things in regards to what i make, as i've always kind of gone with how i feel at that time. the only difference is i've started making different styles completely like house, trance and breaks but i think this is more to do with the fact

- Sam Hudson says (10:15):

i'm learning the program and it a way of using all the effects and plugins etc

Noir Newsletter says (10:17):

Is there any chance we'll be seeing you releasing tracks again with Adam Jukes (from JP & Jukesy), under your Masmada guise?

- Sam Hudson says (10:21):

who knows..we've done a couple of collabs with dom sweeten for deprivation which are coming out soon, but nothing is planned for any more tracks at the moment...he's been moaning at me saying i should make more stuff tho so maybe when he comes down this weekend we may sit on the mac for a bit and see what happens

Noir Newsletter says (10:25):

Tell us about some of the recent gigs you've played and what you've got planned ahead.

- Sam Hudson says (10:32):

well ive just played the tidy weekender which was amazing, also played on the contagious stages of both global gathering and escape into the park which were both rammed and amazing plus ive got the Tidy Christmas Party on the 22nd dec which i' cant explain how chuffed i am about being asked to play at...i'm opening the main room with my bongo guy nick

Noir Newsletter says (10:52):

Which tracks are currently doing it for you?

- Sam Hudson says (11:03):

Mr Clarke & Base Graffiti - Bassline Biscotto...although think the name of that may be changed! Steve Maynards Shape Up & Now Get This tracks on Deprivation are both wicked too

- Sam Hudson says (11:04):

oh and obviously the defective audio and masmada tracks
